Wayne began his career in softball as short stop for Farran's Point. In 1956 Wayne started pitching in the Cornwall Industrial League and from 1961 to 1963 he played for the Championship team Howard Smith Paper Mill in the North End Fastball League. Wayne pitched and was one of the strongest hitters on his team. Wayne continued to pitch for Glengarry Transport and would win multiple championships. During this time period he also pitched in the Dundas League against many of the most noted pitchers in Eastern Ontario, in 1968 he was awarded league MVP.
Throughout Wayne's career he played for two teams that won the Senior A Kemptville Tournament, this was considered the best tournament in Eastern Ontario at the time, with teams attending from all over the Province.
On two occasions in his career Wayne pitched no-hitters, one of them was a seven inning, 18 strike out performance against Ottawa Hydro in Russell.
