Although Steve’s first passion was the sport of hockey, he was known as a multi-sport athlete while attending high school at Rothwell-Osnabruck. He particularly excelled at Basketball and Track and Field, competing at both the East Regionals and OFSAA for Shot Put and Discus. Steve was recognized at R-O for these achievements and took home both Junior and Senior Male Athlete of the Year Awards.
His minor hockey career started in the South Stormont Minor Hockey Association, and in his final season as a South Stormont Flyer Steve racked up 93 points on the Peewee Traveling team as a defenceman.
Steve moved on to play his two years of Bantam hockey with the Seaway Valley AA Rapids and would later be drafted by the Junior A Cornwall Colts of the CJHL. Steve made the team in 1994-1995 and that team proved to be one of the strongest Junior A clubs in Canada being ranked 8th in Canada and capturing the 1994-1995 CJHL Championship for being the top team in Eastern Ontario and the CJHL. Steve and the Colts represented the CJHL at the Fred Page Cup in Joliette, Quebec and placed second in the Eastern Canada Championship.
Steve was drafted the following season with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL, and stayed in Sudbury for half the season before making the decision to return back to Ingleside and re-join the Cornwall Colts. By season’s end, the Colts were raising another CJHL Championship banner for a second consecutive year and were the number 1 ranked Junior A Hockey team in Canada. The Colts represented the CJHL at the Fred Page Cup for a second year and represented the league well.
Steve returned to play for the OHL Wolves to start the 1996-1997 season, but once again decided to return home to finish the year with his Colts teammates. He was named as the Assistant Captain of his team and had another wonderful season.
The following year Steve decided to play for the Jr. B Morrisburg Lions in 1997-1998. He captained that team until he was moved to the Kemptville 73’s at the trade deadline, where he eventually captured an EOJBHL Championship with the team. This team was inducted into the North Grenville Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
Steve returned to the Morrisburg Lions Jr. B team for his last and final season in 1998-1999 where he ended his playing career.
With his playing career over, Steve has coached at the Jr. B level with the Morrisburg Lions and a number of other Minor Hockey Teams. He was named as one of the honourary chairs for the Fred Page Cup that was hosted by the Junior A Cornwall Colts in 2015 and was also named the honourary chair for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl-For-Kids-Sake event in 2013.
