Dalton Cleary coached minor softball and hockey in the Lunenburg area for 11 years, in an era when coaching also included preparing the ball diamond or rink, lining up the referees, supplying transportation to and from the game for his players, and providing a drink and a snack for everyone after the game. He also coached a men's senior hockey team for four years, winning two league championships.
As a volunteer, he devoted countless hours every year for 28 years to building and maintaining three outdoor hockey rinks, and 2 ball diamonds.
Often called upon as an organizer and leader, he was the originator of the Osnabruck Township Recreation Committee in 1964, and served on the committee for 20 years. With his wife Elida, he organized Ingleside's Centennial Sports Day for children in 1967.
