Ben started his hockey career playing for South Stormont and would later join the Seaway Valley Rapids AA. In the fall of 1992 Ben played for the Brockville Braves of the Central Junior Hockey League and was selected as an all star defenseman for the Yzerman Division. Ben scored 8 goals and had 17 assists in his rookie season.
After being drafted 25th overall by the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, Ben played in 118 games from 1993 to 1995 before deciding to it was time to move on. From 1995 to 1997 he played Tier II Junior A for the Antigonish Bull Dogs, and was selected to the All Star team both years. From 1997 to 2001 Ben attended the University of Windsor and played on their Lancers team that won the Queen's Cup. As the Ontario University Athletic Association champs, Ben's team went on to compete in the National Varsity Championships
